Socktober SNS LogoHappy SOCKTOBER Westfield Families!

Wait, what is SOCKTOBER?!? Well if you didn’t know already, SOCKTOBER is a national sole warming movement that gives everyone an easy and fun way to help those in need through donating new socks!

So this SOCKTOBER, the Bloomingdale Character Count Coalition, with the help of Socks and Souls, wants to prove that even the smallest act of caring, like donating a pair of new socks, can help make a huge difference in the lives of the needy and homeless!

Therefore the Village of Bloomingdale has some awesome locations for hosting our own SOCKTOBER Sock Drive Collections all month long to celebrate Character Counts month! With that said, Westfield is one of the sock collection sites and we are holding a grade level competition to see which grade can warm the most souls through soles this SOCKTOBER! With that said, all anyone needs to do in order to participate in our SOCKTOBER Sock drive is a new pair of socks so please considering picking up any type of socks, plain white, funky knee highs, baby ankle socks, etc., from a local store near you!

Now if you are ready to get involved with SOCKTOBER, check out the SOCKTOBER site at (http://socksandsouls.com/pages/socktober)! For those who are on social media, we even have our own SOCKTOBER Sock Event page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/629485767154234/) so please considering joining, as well as sharing it with those you know! Check out our Instagram post at: (https://instagram.com/p/8TquNeBi1n/?taken-by=ilovesocksandsouls)

If you have any questions, please let me know and I look forwarding to having you all help warm souls through soles this SOCKTOBER!

CC Mural Celebration Invite

Last week some Westfield students in Club Hype teamed up with a few DuJardin students and together they began painting the background to the Bloomingdale Character Counts mural using the colors of the 6 Pillars. This week Erickson students came to Westfield to finish the background and prep for the final mural drawings. All of the students involved in painting the mural were ones who made drawings for the Character Counts Mural contest last year.

Once finished, the Character Counts Mural will be hung at Springfield Park near Spring with a special mural revealing – stay tuned for more details to come!

VetOperation Support our Troops (OSOT) is in the process of putting together 3,000+ Christmas Stockings for the Troops at Santa’s Workshop which this year is located at the Lisle Park District.

These stockings are being targeted to our troops “In harm’s way.” Students involved in Club Hype at Westfield Middle School decided to help out by making non-breakable Christmas ornaments to be added to these stockings and shipped overseas! Bravo to Westfield students willing to help our military!

20140424_190455On Monday April 17th 2014, local visiting artist and Westfield alumni Alicia Eisenmann, proud owner of Delish Cakes in Old Town Bloomingdale, demonstrated to students and staff how she creates beautiful, as well as delicious, cakes that look like works of art themselves.

Students, staff and community members then registered to join Westfield’s own Cake challenge for Charity by creating their own cake to be raffled off at Portfolio night with all proceeds going to the Bloomingdale Township’s Food Pantry.

Everyone who participated in baking and decorating a cake for the Challenge received 1 free raffle ticket to try and win whatever cake they wish from the cake raffle. Additional raffle tickets were sold for anyone who wanted to win a cake. Tickets were $1 each or 6 for $5 or 13 for $10 or a wingspan for $20.2

All of the 66 cakes entered into the Cake Challenge were raffled off during Portfolio Night, April 24th 2014 at 7:00pm just prior to the start of the Honors Award Assembly. With all of the Raffle tickets sold, we raised a total of $628.00 for the Bloomingdale Township’s Food Pantry.

Based on all of the cake creations entered into the Cake Challenge for Charity, there was 1 Cake Challenge Student winner and a Cake Challenge Teacher winner who each received a Delish Cakes gift card from Alicia Eisenmann, our visiting cake artist and proud owner of Delish Cakes in Old Town Bloomingdale. The student winner was 7th Grader Emily Kress and the Teacher Winner was Mrs. Jensen. For more information about Delish Cakes, visit their website at http://www.delishcakes.net/

A huge ‘Thank You’ goes out to everyone who made this event such a great success – we could not have do it without the support of everyone who participated and showed support at the raffle!

VeteransGifts

Students involved in Club Hype created ornaments for 28 veterans who live in the spinal cord unit at Hines V.A.. These ornaments will be given to the veterans by some local volunteers who plan on going there to spread holiday cheer and hand out stockings filled with assorted gifts in them!

It is always a wonderful thing when our Westfield students have a chance to somehow help with community events like these!
