8th grade students learned how to draw proportional portraits. Students then learned about facial expressions and took a photo of themsleves acting out an expressions. Students then created a portrait using only a portion of their face; their eyes up and then painted them in a monochromatic color scheme to match their expression.

8th grade students studied the wrappers taken from real candy so that they could create their own black and white outline drawings for a digital project. After they were done using them for that project, student then learned how to render the drawings of these candy packages using Prismacolor Color Pencils as they blend very well and can show shadows and highlights via shading.

8th grade students studied Pop Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_art) and artist Andy Warhol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Warhol) in order to create their own Monochromatic Digital work of art using GIMP and Comic Life. Students first studied the wrappers taken from real candy so that they could create their own black and white outline drawings. These candy drawings were then scanned and placed into a 4 square panel page on Comic Life and then moved into GIMP to be colored digitally using primary and secondary monochromatic color schemes.

8th grade students studied Chicago artist Ed Paschke (http://www.edpaschke.com) and learned about his use of bright colors to illustrate figures. Students then created their own Paschke inspired portrait of an animal using oil pastels.

Do you want to enter an Art Contest? If so the Space Foundation International Student Art Contest invites students from around the world to submit original artwork based on a space-oriented theme. The 2013 contest theme, If I were going…, challenges students to imagine how they would personally experience space travel, exploration or settlement – and then interpret that idea into an original work of visual art (drawing, painting or digital).
Below are examples of 6th – 8th grade students who won last year. All entries are due January 18th, 2013!

Students used www.DollDivine.com to create and customize adorable and fierce animals and magical creatures. Students created everything from cats/kittens, dogs/puppies, horses, ponies, bears, rodents, birds, dragons and so on.
