8th grade students who signed up for the Showcase class pointillism learned about artist George Seurat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Seurat) and his use of pointillism to create the famous painting,  A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jattewhich is at the Art Institute in Chicago. Students then picked a picture of an animal out and used q-tips dipped in paint to create their own mini pointillism painting.
