hero1 CHICAGO — (Oct. 4, 2011) — Symetra Financial, Gallagher Benefit Services and the Chicago Bears honored Westfield Middle School teacher Deyana Matt as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Sept. 29, 2011 during a special assembly. Matt teaches art at the Bloomingdale, Ill. middle school.

“Deyana Matt is one of the most inspiring educators I have ever known in my professional life and a champion for kids,” said Dr. Deborah Kling, principal of Westfield Middle School. “She is seen as more than an art teacher within our school district — she is a mover and shaker, continually coming up with remarkable ideas for integrating the arts into the classroom’s academic content.” Kling nominated Matt for the Symetra Hero in the Classroom award.

In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Matt is a committed and enthusiastic “School Improvement Team” member, who actively works to positively impact Westfield’s climate and culture.
“Devana is a big picture thinker, who looks toward horizons rather than hurdles,” said Kling. “Whether she is conducting a weeklong ‘Spirit Week’ as a student council advisor, working with staff to coordinate interdisciplinary efforts within the curriculum, or serving as the advisor to the Lego Robotics Club and Club Hype, her contributions span both school-day and after-school activities.”

Matt is one of 16 K-12 teachers in the Chicago area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2011 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Bears home game and are acknowledged during on-field presentations at Soldier Field. Matt was recognized at the Oct. 2 game when the Bears take on the Carolina Panthers.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.
